Welcome

Welcome to my new website - ThirdAge,LLC.com (or Third Age for short).  I’m mostly retired but from time to time, I’ll take on consulting assignments, particularly those that help nonprofit senior living boards fulfill the organization’s potential.

The short version

According to the Continuing Care Hall of Fame, I ‘m known for exceptional foresight. I spent more than 40 years in consulting, 25 with Third Age, Inc., a boutique firm with some great people, 7 with CliftonLarsonAllen or CLA, a large accounting and advisory firm, and 9 as the Founder and initial Managing Principal for Trilogy Consulting. During those 40+ years, I provided strategic insight to nearly 1,000 organizations, counseling, challenging and inspiring leadership and boards to envision dynamic futures. It’s been a cool career, especially the time I’ve spent working with Boards of Directors and being somewhat instrumental in several movements: creating a structure for On Lok Senior Health Services that enabled its growth and the PACE replication; guiding the nascent Continuing Care at Home sector; and co-founding the Center for Innovation (now AgingIN), sponsor of The Green House Project and Pioneer Network.  I also served as Professor of Practice at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s Erickson Graduate School.

The Long Version

I formed Trilogy Consulting, LLC after serving as the Managing Principal of Third Age, Inc. and serving as a Principal within the senior living practice of CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP.   Third Age, LLC is my most recent effort.

I’ve been told that I’m known for my willingness to ask provocative questions and probe traditional thinking. Simply stated, not everyone welcomes that. On the other hand, Francois-Marie Arouet’s philosophy (often misattributed to Voltaire) that a person should be judged by their questions, rather than by their answers resonates for me. So I continue to ask questions - a primary one: how can I or we do better. In the case of nonprofit senior living organizations, it should be the fundamental one - framed more eloquently around mission and purpose.

As mentioned in the short version, in addition to consulting, I spent a bit more than 10 years as a Lecturer, Adjunct Associate Professor and Professor of the Practice with University of Maryland Baltimore County’s Erickson School, where I taught graduate courses on Strategy, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation. I also served as the Chair of the Advisory Committee for UMass Boston’s Graduate program in the Management of Aging Services.    And, in 2016 I co-founded the Center for Innovation - a 501(c)(3) that sponsors The Green House Project and The Pioneer Network (it’s now known as Aging Innovation or AgingIN).  More recently, I was inducted into the Continuing Care Hall of Fame.

What have I done, professionally, over those 40 years? I’ve led 1,000 +/- client assignments involving strategic planning, governance, consumer research, and affiliations/mergers.

In terms of education - I attended York College of Pennsylvania, obtained a BS in Business and Administration from Drexel University and a Juris Doctorate from Villanova University.  Fun fact - Pope LEO XIV and I graduated the same year from Villanova!

I’ve been licensed as a Nursing Home Administrator or NHA in Pennsylvania and have served on a dozen or so Boards - of single site organizations, multi-site organizations, at home service providers and associations.

In the past I did a lot of speaking for state and national groups.  Here’s a couple of my favorites:

  • When Dogs Get Wings | Envisioning the Future, Center for Innovation Annual Conference

  • Radical Introspection: CCRCs/LPCs – Past, Pandemic and Future, NCCCRA Annual Meeting

  • Creating an Entrepreneurial Board, Association of Jewish Aging Services

  • Survival Guide:  Strategy and Innovation in an Era of Disruptive Change, The Beacon Institute
